How to fix Gift Cards issued with a discounted value

Edited

The Issue: You may notice that a customer purchased a $100 gift card, but the issued code only has a balance of $80 (or another lower amount).

The Cause: This happens when a customer applies a percentage-based discount code (e.g., 20% OFF) at checkout. By default, our app issues the gift card for the amount the customer actually paid, not the face value.

Here is how to fix this order and prevent it from happening again.

Part 1: How to Fix the Current Order

If a customer has already received a card with the wrong balance, you can fix it instantly without re-issuing the card.

  1. Go to Go Gift Cards DashboardIssued Gift Cards.

  2. Search for the Order Number or Customer Email.

  3. Click Actions → select Top Up Balance.

  4. Enter the missing amount (e.g., if the card is $88 but should be $100, enter 12).

  5. Click Confirm.

Note: The same gift card code will update immediately. You do not need to send the customer a new code.

Part 2: How to Prevent This in the Future

Decide how you want to handle discounts on gift cards and choose Option A or Option B.

Option A: Allow the discount, but issue full value (Recommended) Choose this if you want to run promotions like "Buy a $100 Gift Card for only $80!"

  1. Go to Go Gift Cards DashboardRisk Settings.

  2. Scroll down to the Rule Overrides section.

  3. Check the box for "Skip amount adjustment for discounts."

  4. Save your settings.

Result: If a customer pays $80 for a $100 card, the card will be issued with the full $100 balance.

Option B: Block discounts on Gift Cards entirely Choose this if the discount code was applied by mistake and shouldn't apply to gift cards.

  1. Go to your Shopify AdminDiscounts.

  2. Click on the active discount code.

  3. Under the "Applies to" section, select Specific Collections.

  4. Select your product collections but do not include your "Gift Cards" collection.

  5. Save the discount.

Result: The discount code will no longer work when a customer tries to buy a gift card.

Pro Tip: The "Safety Net" Strategy (Recommended)

We highly recommend applying both Option A and Option B.

Even if you intend to block discounts in Shopify (Option B), human error can happen. By also enabling the "Skip amount adjustment" setting in the app (Option A), you create a safety net.

  • Primary Defense: The discount is blocked in Shopify.

  • Safety Net: If a discount code does accidentally work at checkout, the App will catch it and still issue the full gift card value.

This double-layer protection is the best way to ensure you never have to deal with incorrect balance issues again.
