How to Manage Gift Card Expiration Dates

Edited

It's important to know that gift card expiration is a setting controlled directly within your main Shopify admin, not within the Go Gift Cards app. Our app works with Shopify's powerful gift card system, so any expiration rules you set in Shopify will automatically apply to the gift cards you issue.

The Go Gift Cards app uses Shopify’s built-in gift card system, so expiration dates are controlled by Shopify, not our app.

By default, Shopify gift cards never expire, but merchants can change this in their settings.

Does Go Gift Cards Set an Expiration?

No. Go Gift Cards does not have its own expiration setting. All gift card expiry behaviour comes from your Shopify store settings.

How to Make Gift Cards Never Expire

Follow these steps to make sure your gift cards (including those sent via Go Gift Cards) never expire:

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin.

  2. Go to Settings > Payments.

  3. Scroll to Gift card expiration.

  4. Select “Gift cards never expire.”

  5. Click Save.

This will apply to all new gift cards created, including ones sent through Go Gift Cards.

Important Legal Notes

  • Shopify’s default is "never expire" to comply with laws in many regions (e.g. U.S. gift cards must be valid for at least 5 years).

  • If you choose to add an expiry, make sure it follows your local laws.

  • Shopify requires each gift card to either:

    • Have a clear expiry date, or

    • State that it never expires.
